Expert Vein Care That Restores Comfort And Confidence

Varicose Vein Treatment

Varicose veins aren’t just a cosmetic concern — they can cause aching, heaviness, swelling, and fatigue that affect your day-to-day life. Sometimes varicose veins can cause more serious problems like eczema, ulcers, blood clots, bleeding and infections. At Pulse Veins, we are usually able to use modern, minimally invasive treatments to treat your varicose veins, ease discomfort, and improve both the look and feel of your legs.

Caring for your veins isn’t vanity — it’s vitality.

Your varicose veins: Causes and Treatments

What are they? What causes them?

Varicose veins are visible and bulging leg veins. They often cause symptoms like aching, throbbing, itching and cramps. Sometimes they cause eczema, ulcers, blood clots and bleeding.

Small one-way valves inside leg veins normally keep blood flowing to the heart. When these valves fail, blood leaks backwards towards the feet causing varicose veins. Varicose veins often run in families and can be made worse by pregnancy, weight gain and standing jobs.

Assessing and treating your varicose veins

If you have health insurance, your vein assessment and treatment will be covered by your insurer as long as you meet their criteria for vein treatment.

If you do not have health insurance, we will arrange a treatment plan for you that best meets your needs. This may range from full-service specialist care, to nurse-led care. Our specialists will perform all of your treatments.

When to seek help

When do my varicose veins need treatment?

Early varicose veins are often unsightly and many people seek treatment for cosmetic reasons.

Larger varicose veins may start to cause aching, throbbing, itching and leg cramps. Many people want treatment to alleviate these symptoms.

Advanced varicose veins may cause eczema, leg ulcers, blood clots and bleeding. Vein treatment is essential to prevent worsening these serious problems.

What investigations do I need?

An Ultrasound Scan of your varicose veins in your legs usually gives us enough information to plan your future treatment. Sometimes an ultrasound scan of your abdomen and pelvis is needed for conditions such as Pelvic Varicose Veins.

Our specialist team works closely with our sonographers (ultrasound technicians) who perform the scans.

Treatment options for varicose veins

Compression socks and Stockings

These help manage symptoms and protect the skin. They provide effective relief for vein-related discomfort and skin problems.

Varicose Vein Closure and Sclerotherapy

We use several techniques to treat varicose veins. We mainly use a medical sealant called Venaseal or a heat treatment called Radiofrequency. Both are equally effective. The main leaking vein that feeds the varicose veins is closed off with either Venaseal or Radiofrequency.

Sclerotherapy treats smaller veins. The varicose veins that branch off from the main leaking vein are treated with ultrasound-guided injections of a vein irritant. This is called Sclerotherapy. Spider veins can be treated with a similar technique called microsclerotherapy.

These minimally invasive treatments are walk in, walk out, quick procedures with minimal down time.

Varicose Vein Surgery

Varicose vein & stripping & is rarely performed these days. Sometimes small surgical procedures are necessary to treat some areas of larger varicose veins that are not suitable for closure using heat or sealing treatments. When needed, these small surgical procedures will give patients better long term outcomes. They are usually performed under local anaesthetic and do not require a hospital stay.

Spider Vein Laser

This is a skin treatment that uses a Vascular Laser to treat small veins and Spider Veins. Laser is available at our Pulse Laser Aesthetics clinics in Auckland and Wellington.
